Progress Report #1

Every year we have tryed to upgrade the Airfield to keep the progression happening within the Auckland Mtb Dirt Jump community. And this summer is no different. Its only going to keep getting better. YES!!!(with a virtual hi-5).
Last friday we had the Bobcat arrive. Carl Sorenson from Sorenson Earthworks was definitly the man for the job. With a history in building MotoX tracks he had a good eye and the right equiptment to get the job done. Over the last month or so, Haydn has been sketching over A4 photos to get some realistic vision going on, and to life it has now become.
We are adding a new drop line to the start of the main line. The roll in landing has been made wider and this now runs into a new takeoff, which is a bigger gap than the previous 1st takeoff. The landing of the 1st has been widened by about another meter and abit to the left. The 1st landing has also been buffed up abit, and looks really steep at the moment, but this will pack down and will be alot nicer to ride.

So now that the first is alot wider you will be able to transfer your lines left to right or vice versa. Wicked. The second takeoff has been made wider by a whole new takeoff and the wooden ramp has been pulled out. The second landing hasnt changed but got a nice covering of dirt.

The third has had the takeoff buffed up. It had become really flat and had no pop left in it, so we have raised it slightly and given the face a slab of beef. This will shoot you niceley into the 3rd landing which has also been made stepper to compensate for the extra pop. No photos of the third landing yet, but its BOSS as.

So off the 3rd you can go three ways. down the side shoot the landing off the step down only really worked for the big drop off the top. This landing has been made about a meter wider each side and is now massive. This landing will work really well for those that like to hip left to the berm, and if your coming off the big drop, there is no way your gonna miss it now.

Off the third also you can break right and shoot off down the Monster Line. The Monster Step Down and Monter Double landings both got new dirt. Alot of new dirt. This line is prime and massive things are gonna go down this summer. Cant wait.

Other additions include a new landing on the double behind the wallride. People were over jumping this, so hopefully we have got it right and no more over jumping. the backs of the concrete tunnels have had more dirt shaped into them. The Intermediate line has been buffed and will now hold better flow (well i reckon anyways). and the horrible Grom line is gone and has been replaced with what resembles a small rythms section from a MotoX track. They ride awesome.

So i reckon for 2 1/2 days Haydn and Carl have done an amazing job. All the hard work is done. Now all we have to do is pack them in and clean up, then ride them in. they will be closed for a little bit longer but it will all be worth it.

So so happy, haha.

The suns shining alot more, day light savings is here, the tarps have come off and it time to ride.

Having ridden the jumps a few times in the last couple of days, its safe to say that having the Airfield closed was definitly a good idea. I literally removed the tarps, picked off an array of different slugs and worms, swept them down and bam, ready to go.

But even though they are riding there is still alot of work to be done and if the weather turns shithouse then they will be closed untill it fines up. If the cone is up on the roll in and the tarps are on then, NO, ride. But if not then they are all good to go. Just remember that you still have to register to ride the Airfield aswell. It is still part of Woodhill MTB Park.

Over the summer Haydn and I are going to be holding jams and mini comps which will have bbqs and spot prizes. On these days we will be doing mid morning dig sessions, then ride and jam, then some feed and prize giveaways. What we are trying to acheive with these days is to get more of a rider community going on in The Airfield. We all need to do our bit if we want a mint Dirt Park. Because more hand sget alot more done than just Haydn and myself.

But enough talking, this summer is gonna be off the hook and i actually can not wait. Hope to see you all out at the park. Sick.

Spring Is Now Here.

Its been a while since i lasted posted anything here on Woodhill-Dirt. Its not that havnt been busy building and digging, it just hasnt been dirt work. Over winter we have spent alot of time out in the forest cleaning up the trails and making the best of the damp conditions. Wet Soggy conditions good for the forest, not for dirt jumps.
But spring is here and we will all soon get to ride dirt again. I want to thank everyone for respecting our reasons for wanting to preserve the integrity of the jumps over winter. Not riding them over this time just means that we dont have to do alot of work in getting them ridable. We are going to be making a few changes to the grom and intermediate lines as well as the main and the Monster lines over the next couple of months. Over Summer we will also be having JamsSessions with BBQ and maybe a few spot prizes here and there. I antincipate a good summer ahead.
So all i can say really is stay tuned to Woodhill-Dirt for all your Airfield news over spring and summer and get involved with the park. see you all on the dirt soon.

Well Winters Come.

Winter has definitly come out at the forest. Its damp, misty, its been raing alot and structures are wet. Did a pretty dodgy burnout on Crazy Train the other day.
Theres not alot going on in terms of new additional freeride stuff for now but we will be starting the next addition to The Barrel Run in the next couple of months.
I had a couple of dudes ask me the other day if they could scrub off the mossy build up on parts of Ho Chi Min. I think this is a great idea and am maybe planning a sunday morning trail clean up. All i will need is about ten keen guys with a few tools of there own. I will have more details on this in the weeks to come. So ill keep you all posted.
Haydz and I however have just added another 5.5mtrs of wall to the wallride on The Barrel Run. This now makes it 14.5mtrs long. Its impressive. Get up there and check it out.

And i want photos people. Photos of your mean hucks and big jumps. Ill chuck em on the blog at the end of every month. Ill stick up 10 pics so make sure you add your name, photographer and rider. Send them through to th_ragdoll@hotmail.com.

Winters Coming. Back to FreeRiding For Me.

Okay so now that the comp has been and gone and the miserable weather patterns are gonna start to set in. Im thinking i may head back to the trails for the winter. There is only a few things that are gonna be going on in the Airfield over winter that arent going to be big jobs in the grand scheme of things, - we are gonna change the intermediate and grom lines so that we can get some good transfer lines going, - thre will be an additional line down the right side of the containers.... maybe and a few tweaks to the pump track. So really this is not going to give me alot to report on.

So Haydz and myself will be working alot more out on the trails. Tweaking tracks, cutting new trails in a newly secured block, building new structures, fixing old ones and heaps more. So this is what i am going to report on. Also I am changing the Header of the Blog to "Woodhill FreeRide". I will use this name for the winter and once Spring rolls round and we get back into dirt work it will go back to "Woodhill Dirt". See what im doing there, haha, but the domain name stays as Woodhil-Dirt.

So to all the FreeRiders of Woodhill keep an eye out for trail updates, pics and a whole lot more. Winter is gonna go off. And im keen to try and translate some new skills to the trails. Also just a convo in passing, what do people think about a slopestyle comp on "The Barrel Run". Message back on Facebook. Im keen. See you out there.

The Monster Energy NZ Dirt Jump Open this past weekend was… for lack of a better phrase…”OFF THE HOOK”. The event started off with a bang on the Saturday with 50 riders at the qualifying and nearly 200 people showing up to watch that. Amongst the big names to watch were South island legend Brett Frew, BMXer turned on the day 26 incher Paul Langlands and a host of other strong names in the NZ Dirt Jump fraternity hitting up the newly transformed Monster Energy “Airfield”, here at the Woodhill Mountain Bike Park.

The Under 16 Junior section was quite surprising and showed us all that these young guys could rip with Nick Dethridge (AKL) and Taniora Te Pou(CHC) firmly securing themselves in the “watch this space” category.

The main event on Sunday started in a relaxing manner in a new Jam style format as we wittled our way down to the top ten open riders and top 5 juniors. The first 45 minutes session had quality riding with every rider stomping some pretty sweet tricks.

Then things got all twisted, literally. The first of the Nature Valley Best Trick competitions got underway with the riders trying to get their hands on the first of the two CASH prizes for best trick in this 20 minute session. Paul Langlands (Cambridge) got back on his BMX for the session and started with a bang laying down a Superflip, Barrel Rolls and then tried endlessly to get his Flipwhip. Brett Frew (Southland) trademarked an Opposite 3, and other riders such as Lewis Jones(Raglan) with his One handed Pendulums, Conor McFarlane (Invercargill) with his massive 3’s. Alan Montifiore (AKL) with his Front Flip all tore it up and Brian Anzellotti (AKL) stomped a frontflip off the roll in ramp, impressive. But the cash belonged to Jed Mildon (Taupo) as he threw down a perfect 3Sixty double tailwhip…boom! The event just took a leap to a whole new level. The crowd responded and the Monster Airfield came alive.

From there on the lads realised to take home the Cash Prizes they needed to step up their game. They also knew they had to start hitting the new Monster Line, a 7½m step down followed by a huge 8½m double and then a jump over a 3m high concrete pipe.

But before the finals kicked in and the top 5 Open riders got to throw down, we had the 2nd of the Nature Valley Best Tricks. This one was over the Monster Jump, and we all thought the first one had the riders and the crowd pumped. Paul Langlands (back on his MTB), Jed Mildon, and 6 or so other riders (who were brave enough) took on the challenge. Amongst the Flipwhip, several Tailwhips, the Pendulums, the No Footers to Tuck No Handers, the 3Sixty turndowns and so many more Monster tricks Jed Mildon secured the cash again by landing a perfectly executed DOUBLE backflip and instantly came a favourite with the 1000+ crowd. INCREDIBLE!

The highlights continued in the last 20 minutes Final’s session with the remaining 5 open riders having one last chance to show us their stuff. An injured Phil McLean (CHC) started landing his tail whips combined into the runs with 360's and huge Tuck no handers. Elmo Cotter (Wanaka) showed everyone how to execute massive but perfect backflips over and over again including one run where he did 4 in a row. Never say die Conor McFarlane blew everyone’s mind when he backflipped the seemingly unflippable Monster Line Step Down, when the closest thing to a trick on this jump (designed to simply set you up for the biggie) so far had been a x-up or a whip. He then proceeded to nail a perfect 3Sixty over the Monster Jump to make that one of the best runs of the competition and jumping into 2nd place. Lewis Jones rode all of the different lines in the park throwing down combo after combo to secure his spot in 3nd place. But the day belonged to Paul Langlands with his consistent and seemingly bottomless bag of tricks executed at World Class level.

Night Jam Cancelled.

Due to a few things out of our control we are no longer able to hold the night jam. Bit of a bummer but this maybe something we can do later on down the line.

The course is running mint and looking pretty good. We want to keep it that way so please respect all signage in the Airfield and all taped off areas. The course will be open from midday onwards all week, reason for this is it just gives morning moisture a chance to disapate. We just want to keep it mint.

Looking forward to seeing you all there on Saturday, its gonna be a mean shred fest. Bring ya game face because competition is going to be feirce. Laters

Stoked. Was such a good arvo and i wan to thank evryone who came out. Thanks.
Changes to any jump line are always gonna be different at first but im glad everyone rode the course well. So a few more tweaks are gonna happen over the next couple of weeks before the Open, but they are much needed. But im amped for the open and its gonna be a mad Comp.
Next Jam is April 21st. UNDER LIGHTS. Yeah Yaaaa

Bummer to say but this is now gonna be a feature here on Woodhill-Dirt. I hope I dont have to write it up but unfortunatley it is sometimes apart of our sport.
Anthony Pennington, in the weekend broke his ankle on the road gap on The Barrel Run. Very sad to see one of the Auckland NZDJO hopefuls having to pull out like that. Rest up buddy, and you'll be back in no time.
In other injury news Callum Hogg is recovering well from his neck inury he sustained at Rampage. Hope to see you back out soon bro.

The Waiting Is Over...Almost.

This friday afternoon the Airfield line will be re-opened. There may be a a few more closures over the next couple of weeks leading up to the NZDJO but we will try to keep them open as much as we can.
So this friday if you want to come out and have a jam then make your way out. The jumps are at a stage now where they need to start getting ridden in, so come help me.

Progress Reopt

Over the last week we have got quite abit done in terms of addition to the to the main line and maintenence. The second has been beefed up with abit more lip and the landing has had a new knuckle built on it. This is hopefully going to stop you from over shooting the top of the knuckle and having to scrub speed into it. It should also give you abit more pop to throw down.
The last after the wallride has also been beefed up with more lip and landing and is looking good.
Haydz worked hard core today filling cracks and reshaping the take off on the left hand side of the third. We still have abit to do but we are on track with what we are doing. So come the DJO the jumps are gonna be prime.
But all we do ask is that if the tapes are up its because we are working on that section and that you dont lift or pull down the tape. Also if you hve school holidays coming up soon and want to help out with some digging feel free to drop me an email th_ragdoll@hotmail.com.

So This Is The Plan.

Okay so as most of you know the NZDJO is coming up at the end of April. We still have two more Monster Energy Night Jams left and in this time the jumps are going to get quite abit of use.
You all know that dirt jumps need quite abit of upkeep and maitenence. So over the next 6 weeks Haydn and Myself (Tim Hunter) will be making a few needed tweaks to the jumps. Some areas will be getting more work than others, so as we work on them we will be taping off the area that we are working in. We just ask that everyone respects the taped off sections of the course. This way the work we are doing will hold up untill the Open, then we wont have too much work to do before the Open. Sweeet.
So onto a few of the changes and tweaks that are going to made. Some of you may have seen the last double after the wallride. Its getting beefed up. We have added to the takeoff and given it a little more length and we have added to the landing. Its got a new knuckle and we have made it wider on both sides.
The first double landing is going to get made wider, so that bangers can be thrown down with no fear of riding off the side or missing backside.
The second double is going to get abit of a makeover. Alot of people are finding that they are over shooting it and landing too deep. Not all of us have natural boost like Nick Dethridge so we are are gonna pack the the takeoff out a little bit, give it a little more length, so you go strait up and not go out so far. In doing this, we are also gonna give the landing a new knuckle and pack out the landing abit more.
There will be alot more things going on around the Airfield over the next six weeks so we just ask that you repect the areas that are being worked on and stay off them untill the tape comes down. The Monster Line is OPEN but only to those who can do it and know they can do it, and only if Park Staff are there at the shelter. We want you boys to tarin and ride as much as you can before the Open but we also want it looking and running mint.
Also one last thing. If anyone has spare time to volunteer to some digging and helping out over the next 6 weeks we would really really appreciate the help. Stuck In The Sand.....So Not Cool!!!

So on Saturady Rodrigo Rila (hes an awesome crazy Brazilian) kindly donated his time and a truck to pick up some dirt for us. All was going well, with 3 big truck loads being dumped beside each of the top jumps. But all went wrong when we tryed to back the truck in through the grom and intermediate lines to get a load on the landing of the wallride.
The truck got stuck in some soft sand next to the last jump of the line, where with every small movement of throttle the truck just got deeper and deeper. It eventually got to the point where it was sitting on the diff and axle of the truck. Bummer. But what made this worse was we had a full oad of dirt.
So we unloaded the dirt by hand, dug the truck out as much as we could and used 2 4x4's to pull it out. Big mission, but we got it sorted.
Thanks heaps to Rod, Anthony, Jamie and Nick for helping out and the crazy old fella who gave us the extra tow. Cheers fellas.

MONSTER ENERGY Jump Jam.

So last night we had the first of 3 Wednesday evening Jump Jams. For the fist one I thought it was pretty good. We had a solid crew of riders turn up and everyone had a mean ride. Including some of Auckalnds prominent BMX riders, Piggy, Alan and Stephen. Cheers for rocking out boys and props for being the first BMX boys to ride the whole line plus the MONSTER LINE. Heaps of bangers were being thrown down from all riders. Nick Dethridge was stomping his 3s, Anthony Pennington and Myself (Tim Hunter) were dialling in our flips and linking them in our runs, awesome and everyone else was killing it on the course. MONSTER ENERGY came to the party and droppped off some goodies, so halfway through the evening we handed out some spotties. So spread the word, the next Jam will be on the 24th of March, same time same place.

Well What A Day. So Sweet!!!!

So today was a big day. Alot got done on the jumps. The first in the main line got a nice coating of clay. The whole main line got swept and watered. A temporary take off got built after the Monster Jump and to top it all off we were graced with the arrival of kiwi legends Kelly McGarry and Chris Beverland. SICK. A few others turned up and the jam was on. Mean riding Nick and Conner.
What a day. Im shagged as. Thanks to Liam for all the help. Your the Man bro. Check the pics people, Mean. They are abit blurry but you get the jist huh.

Okay so today Liam Potter and Myself (Tim Hunter) made our way out The Airfield for a jam. We met up with Brad and Tammy from Destructive Design and they got some shots for their web pages.
But today was gonna be more about stepping up to a few things rather than the photos. There was 3 things on my list and I was gonna tick em all off.
First one was the Big Double on the 'Monster Line'. Since i got home its been something that i wanted to do, obviously. But props to Haydz and John. Its a big jump but it works well. Nice work guys. But i must say that i almost ate it so hard on my first attempt. I full Bendered it and almost flat landed in a full vertical manual. I dont know how i didnt crash but i was stoked i held it and managed to ride it out. Hahaha.

Second thing was Back Flipping the 2nd dirt jump in the top 3. I went up to the top sand jump, threw 2 really nice ones, then moved down to the real jumps. Took awhile but then i mustered up some courage to give it ago. I think the convo went something like this. Tim- " man i so scared about throwing this flip, argggh". Brad- "if you dont try youl'll never know bro". So i thought hes right. So i tryed it and i stuck it. So sick. So stoked.

And the last on the list was a Tuck No-hander over dirt. I can do them, ive done them plenty of times before, but for some reason throwing them over the Airfield just wigged me out. But i got them dialled in. Stoked as.

Liam was riding mean all day. Hooking the big lines and making it look easy. Props bro.
Dave turned up late arvo and joined the jam. Respect Dave, your riding is getting heaps better.

The Week That Was.

Okay so last week was a pretty busy week i guess. Alot was going on within the Airfield and i seen some spectacular riding going down. Big shout out to Aiden for hitting the Monster Line whaen he was actually just gonna try the step down. Way to go bro, nice.
We have added a bigger landing off the tunnel so that the last jump will be somewhat sizeable. We packed a whole lot of fresh clay on the sides of the top jumps, so they look a little more pleasing to the eye and we also took out the wooden kicker and reset it into the ground. Now its nice and level and works mint.
Also keep a look out for an episode of Target in the next coming months that will feature footage of the Airfield. The Target team have been out there testing shitty mountain bikes, but i got to do some stunt work for intro peices. Should be interesting to see how that comes out.

a- when i do something crazy and getting a mean addrenilin rush, watching a mate get a move dialed and just chilling with the boys

Okay so we have now completly covered the Monster Line with nice new clay. We are gonna leave for a week or so, to just let the dirt settle and then we are gonna do a final pack and shape. But I have to say, i think its looking well impresive.

So please, by all means go and check it out. But if you could please stay behind the tape for now that would be greatly appreciated.

So today we carried on from yesterday, obviously. We used some cut up tree trunk to ledge out the landing and take off so that we wouldnt have to use as much dirt to make them abit wider. Id say it worked a minta. Now both the take off and landing have been covered with the really nice clay, the landing of the step down and the run in to the take off of the 30 footer got layered as well.

We have closed this line and will have it closed for the next 2 weeks so please respect the tape that has been put up. Just stand back and admire. Hahaha

Update On Todays Dig Session

So this morning Myself (Tim Hunter) and Callum Hogg made our way to Woodhill at the ripe hour of 8am. We arrived at around 845am and Callum warmed himself up with abit of dirtjumping to start his day. Haydn Shore (The Boss Man) then came up to the jumps and we got into it.

We had a truck load of really nice clay turn up which we had dumped on the Monster Line. We smoothed out the massive landing with really new clay to cover the bumpy base that has now set hard. We are also widening the landing so that it doesnt feel so sniper and you can maybe get your trick on if your Man enough, haha.

We then had another truck load of clay turn up so that we could smooth out the run in and add to the sides of the take off. Well Callum took care of the run in, and i must say he did a magnificent job, Haydn and I took care of some much needed tweaks to the pump track.

So all in all it was a good day for digging. Not too hot and not too cold.

Mad Sunday Arvo Jam.

Today was a prime day for dirt jumping. It wasnt sunny and hot, it was overcast and no wind. I say perfect conditions for a good arvo of riding.
So we had abit of a muckaround on the Intermediate Line to get warmed up before hitting up the Main Line.
Gotta give a couple of props to a couple of the lads. First props goes out to my boy Dave Franich for finally manning up and hitting the top 3 in the Main Line. Not only did he man up and hit them he did it with style, throwing xups, whips, small tables and i saw a one hander in there at on stage. Good stuff Bro, nice step in the right direction.
Second props would be to Joel for riding the Main line on his brakless Bmx. What a champ. Good shit bro, i can fairly say that i would never do it, so MAD PROPS bro.
Then we headed up to the Top Sand Jump where Anthony and I had a mean session on flips. I bailed out of one flip and my bike came down on the nose and now i have a bent frame. Bummer, im gutted as. But was a good session up there. Aiden hit up some big 3s and Joel was playing on his Bmx.
All in all was good days riding. Shout outs to Foes, Tenn-Dawg and Jimmy and James for joining the good times too.

Okay so now that John Butler (former meachanic/jump builder) has officially left the country, I (Tim Hunter) have now stepped in to fill his position as Mechanic and Dirt Jump Builder, plus many other things that I will be doing around at Woodhill MountainBike park. So if you see me out there working away, come say "Whats Up".
I will be starting work again this Wednesday, so this means the new Monster Energy Airfield will continue to grow and mould into a new level of riding for all of us.

So keep a look out for the continuing upgrades to 'The Monster' line.

Over the last few days some new signage has gone up on the side of the containers. Massive Monster Energy signs. I reckon it looks awesome. Gives the Airfield a whole new feel for 2010. Sweet.

Okay so ive decided to change the name of my blog and take it in a whole new direction. This blog is going to be a news feed for the Airfield Dirt Jump Park up at Woodhill Forest in Auckland, Nz. It will consist of news about the jumps and the dirt park, pics, videos, crashes, goings ons and just good times had there by the all who ride the park.

i will also post small interviews and bike checks with local riders.

So heres the firt post for 2010.

Transition bikes are no longer the sponser for the Airfeild. I have been away for the last 3 months and it seems like Monster Energy has taken over with new sponsership. They are expecting big things and over the start of the summer Haydn Shore (Bikeparks Manager) and John Butler (now resigned Park Mechanic) started on what is called "The Monster" line. I assure you this line lives up to its name, its big.
It consists of a slighty right handed 20-25ft step down gap, into a 30ft double, into about a 25ft double to finish with. The line is not finished yet, but will be in no time.

so keep an eye out for more news to come.
